The Glaring Problem of Tomorrow's War

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
8/25/2014 6:14 AM

With so much going on around the world, the recent shooting exchange between the troops of India and Pakistan forces in the disputed Kashmir region may have gone unnoticed. According to reports, two people from both sides died in the latest round of trouble.

These outbursts have occurred after both countries agreed to a bilateral ceasefire in November 2003. However, there will be a day of reckoning that could shake the entire planet.

(Photo: The Wagah border closing ceremony held daily is an amazing display with India Border Security Forces and Pakistan Rangers simultaneously lowering their nations’ flags as they close the border. The spectacle has gone on since 1959 on Grand Trunk Road; for years, this has been the only road that connects the two nations. See video:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ0ue-XGl9c

All eyes are on the Middle East, and its never-ending turmoil. However, one day, events further east will capture the world's imagination, not because of the kind of savagery displayed by ISIS or the civil conflicts and coups that only lead to more civil conflicts and coups, but for the sheer magnitude of the power and destructive capabilities. It is hard to fathom a time when sides will be drawn and war unleashed. There will be strange bedfellows.

The Japanese will partner with the nations they annihilated and humiliated in World War II, while China will be the big dog attracting a bevy of would-be partners and possibly Russia. You see, for all the pomp and circumstances off the Wagah border, ritual India is not bulking up for an eventual conflict with Pakistan... it’s preparing for an eventual war with China.

In the past week, India has commissioned its largest indigenous ship… a world-class destroyer, the INS Kolkata (below) and a stealth anti-submarine warship, the INS Kamorta. The goal is to deter China enough to avoid war.

Ninety percent of the world's oil delivered by sea must cross the Indian waters, and China has been very aggressive as of late. It has been reminding everyone that it intends to control these ocean-lanes. Of course, China has no problem using intimidation tactics with any nation, including the United States. On Friday, Chinese warplanes came within several feet of American military planes, using rolling techniques to make visible its weaponry and perhaps its intent.

There is no doubt that we are dealing with savages who behead journalists, rape women, and slaughter Christians, but the greatest conflict over oil and power will not happen in the Middle East. The animosity, power, and determination of countries involved will draw America into hard choices. Our fear of combat will embolden some and force allies to take matters into their own hands. Moreover, this is just another reason we need to deal with ISIS with an iron fist and swift resolve that sends a message to the world now and ten years from now.

Today’s Session

As earning season nears its end, we have fewer companies reporting each week. Though this mornings’ companies did relatively well, they will not be enough to move the market (chart below). However, we have a few sources of economic data that sure will move the market. This morning, we await the Chicago Fed National Activity Index, the Flash Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) Service report, and new home sales. The major indices are indicating higher, so far, and hopefully, they will be able to continue the rally this week, especially as individual investors are extremely bullish.

Big news of the session includes Intermune (ITMN) being acquired by Roche for $8.3 billion (we are long on the swing service) and Burger King (BKW) buying Tim Horton’s (THI), in part, for lower taxes. It is true that Canada has a lower corporate tax rate than the United States, but this deal allows Burger King the opportunity to earn money around the world and bring it “home” without penalties. US based companies must pay taxes around the world in places where money is earned and then, if they want to bring profits home, pay another 35%.

America Hostile Environment

Considering how in the last four years, comparable store sales at Burger King have only been higher once, the downward trend continues, coupled with the company closing stores. There have been a couple near death experiences for the company over the years from 2002 to 2006 as the franchisees closed 1,196 stores.

Not only does the administration continue to support the highest corporate taxes in the world, they are pushing for higher minimum wages to unreasonable levels. It’s no wonder that companies are struggling to remain above ground.

WWIII will not be a WWII style war. This one will be over in less than a month as all parties will go all in with all they got. Probably nuclear. "A come as your are" war.

Just destroy the bad guys. Russia, China & US do not want war. It's always about the money.

If BRIC ever works the US will be meaningless in the end.

If you are interested in more information, this free booklet "The Middle East in Bible Prophecy" will help put all that's going on in perspective!

I am German born, thus I had IT with WWIII....the last one is still haunting the German nation, they still get blamed, but at least financially, they have the last smirk!

Karin Pereira on 8/25/2014 11:22:42 AM
Like it or not when the US does not show strong leadership the mice come out to play.
Lots of mice out there running around right now.

It might come close but cooler heads will prevail

It's time to put an end to 2nd century thinking and sharia law and all those who live it, believe in it and oppose it on others, it's an obamanation , desert sand makes great glass, put a stop to those who would hurt or do our families harm, eliminate this disease from the face of the earth, I don't hate, just self-preservation, as your family is so more important to you, mine is too, evil is evil, God would not want this evil to exist, he would depend on America to put it at an end.

I do believe war is inevitable but not necessarily decimation of physical assets. The new war is a cyber war aimed as economically crippling the foe. There will always be physical fighting but I believe the next major war will be one of economics.

Dave Drewes on 8/25/2014 12:10:31 PM
When you have a PARTY that is so disengaged with what is going on around the world and how long term it will effect us, we're in big trouble. Instead of asking the pundit's and politicians what going on in Irag & the middle east, you should talk to the soldier that was on the ground there, who talked to the real people. I think you will find out that they didn't want us to leave, because they were feeling free, but now they will never trust us again and what does that do for our security? SAD, SAD, SAD,

I believe it will be called Armagaeddon.

While tensions are extended between Pakistan and India both are nuclear powers and share an extensive border. Nukes won't be used. Tensions may escalate but will not become all out war. In Iraq/Syria region, in spit of Obama's incompetence, I believe that circumstances will bring a coalition together led by the USA (Obama will take credit with MSM supporting that POV) and attack the Islamic State. This religious war will last into the middle of this century.

Jim Sands on 8/25/2014 2:21:17 PM
I wouldn't call it WW3 but at some point
we will have to go into the Middle East
again and we should eradicate the terrorist once and for all, but our politicians don't know how to win a war.
They should leave it solely to the military.

Robert on 8/25/2014 2:49:10 PM
Countries adjacent to warring regions will grasp the threat of inevitable economic damage, unmanageable refugee floods, lost tourism revenue and political instability and finally pitch in with meaningful and useful action, making it sensible for the international community to step in forcefully before it gets to that. Or is that just a dream I had last night?

Patricia Flynn on 8/25/2014 3:57:15 PM
It is usually about hatred, power or oil.....

cynthia taylor on 8/25/2014 3:58:55 PM
I lived in India, spent some time in Pakistan, have passed through the Wagah border several times, and witnessed the Border closing ceremony.
The leaders of these countries belong to an "old boys club" that have a common background of a first class, British education and London clubs. They are sophisticated and smart enough not to let this get out of hand. Yes, they will bluster and make threats, but that's for public political consumption.
As far as the far east, China is prominent, and the most important thing the Chinese value is stability. It's very unlikely they will risk their economic gains of the last decades by getting into a major war. (I have a Chinese wife, been to China several times, spoken with her family about WW2 and the cultural revolution, they don't want any more of that).
The current Middle East (ISIS), is solvable if we have the determination to do it. Unfortunately our government doesn't have it. Israel can take care of itself, thank God they have the determination to do it.

We may not be at war with Islam, but Islam is at war with us.
